Record of a Meeting between John Major and Church Leaders on 22 December 1993 in the Afternoon

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

1993-12-22

A letter recording a meeting between John Major, Archbishop Robin Eames, Cardinal Cahal Daly, Dr. Andrew Rogers and the Reverend Richard Taylor. Eames said that in the case of non-acceptance of the declaration there would be widespread support for the Government taking further action, inluding selective internment. Dr. Rogers agreed. General agreement that Dr Paisley had attracted less support than expected, especially from UDF and UFF – significant that his fight was with Molyneaux as much as Adams. General consensus that the PIRA is afraid of a split.
