Record of a Meeting between John Major and Party Leaders on 22 December 1993

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

1993-12-22

A letter recording a meeting between John Major, Patrick Mayhew, Jim Molyneaux, John Alderdice, John Hume and Ian Paisley to exchange views given the pivotal position over the coming weeks. A lot of detail given. Alderdice was keen to get re-started on Talks whether or not Sinn Féin decide to end violence. Hume saw widespread support for the joint declaration and hoped that Sinn Féin would accept the challenge and join the Talks. Molyneaux said the declaration was more of an Irish intiative and went further than the unionists would have liked; since it seemed peace would not be delivered quickly he was keen to get started on Talks. Paisley thought the Joint Declaration was being sold differently to both sides and gave the Irish government a role in Strand 1. Appalled that inclusion of Sinn Féin would not necessarily be subject to decommissioning. Conflict between Paisley and others.
