A memo from Edward Oakden, Private Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Northern Ireland, to John Holmes, Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, dated 24 July 1996. The memo recounts in brief Oakden's telephone call with John Hume, SDLP [Social Democratic and Labour Party] leader, regarding a letter written by John Major, British Prime Minister, which Hume sent on to Gerry Adams, Sinn Féin leader. Hume reportedly asked whether the British Government thought a meeting between officials and Sinn Féin would be helpful.
