Record of meeting with press statement attached. John Hume describes a recent meeting with Gerry Adams and highlights the points he wants clarification regarding. Hume makes suggestions as to what line the Prime Minister could take. Also raises the idea that the Joint Declaration could be put to a referendum. He says that Adams is trying above all to avoid an IRA split. Major emphasised a refusal to clarify the Joint Declaration.
