This document provides an account of a meeting between John Major and John Hume that took place on 2 July 1996. Hume told Major that Gerry Adams had confirmed that if PIRA could be reassured that the negotiations would be serious, comprehensive and inclusive, and that decommissioning would not be a pre-condition, that they would call for a ceasefire. The record notes that Hume handed Major a letter from Adams, which can be found elsewhere in the box.
