A record of a meeting on 22 July 1996 between John Major, British Prime Minister, Hugh Smyth and David Ervine, both members of the PUP [Progressive Unionist Party], and Gary McMichael and John White, both members of the UDP [Ulster Democratic Party]. The record was written by John Holmes, Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, and sent to Martin Howard, Private Secretary to the Northern Ireland Office, on 23 July 1996. The meeting discussed British commitment to the Union, how to bring Sinn Féin/the IRA [Irish Republican Army] into the multi-party negotiations, and concessions for loyalist prisoners. Holmes described the meeting as constructive.
