Enclosure 1.1: Submission by Alliance on the breaches of the Mitchell Principles, 10 September 1996

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

1996-10-09

This document contains a submission from Alliance regarding alleged breaches of the Mitchell Principles by the UUP, the DUP and the loyalist parties. On the first point, it notes that members of the UUP and the DUP were involved in the Orange Order campaign, which had "challenged the rule of law and the authority of the RUC" at Drumcree and which, he alleged, amounted to a breach of the Mitchell Principles. Second, it notes that the absence of a statement of condemnation from the loyalist parties for the Combined Loyalist Military Command's threat to Billy Wright amounts to a breach of the Mitchell Principles. Third, he accused William McCrea of breaching the Mitchell Principles on the basis of his support for Billy Wright at a public rally in Portadown on 4 September 1996.
