1991-01-28

This document provides an account of a meeting between Danny McNeill and John Hume on 25 January 1991, where McNeill gave Hume copies of Peter Brooke's statement of 24 December 1990 regarding the Christmas ceasefire and press release of 22 January 1991, which Hume intended to pass on to his PIRA contacts. Hume told McNeill that Charles Haughey intended to take Brooke's thoughts on the idea of a joint declaration by the British and Irish Governments and a related nationalist forum where Sinn Féin would be invited for dialogue in exchange for a total cessation of violence. McNeill also recorded Hume's concerns that the political development process could jeopardize the political movement of PIRA/Sinn Féin. The last page of the document is duplicated.
