Alderdice wanted to be updated on developments since he last spoke to the Prime Minister so that he could continue to try and keep the Unionists on side. He had also been consulted by the Taoiseach. He expressed his doubts about the possibility of the PIRA renouncing violence at a price unionists could accept, and expressed his concern about the amount of stress John Hume was under. He noted the importance of John Dunlop's views.
