A letter from John Holmes, Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, to John Major, British Prime Minister, written on 30 July 1996 in advance of a telephone call between Major and John Bruton, Taoiseach, scheduled for 31 July 1996. The letter outlines points to advance and lines to take on key issues likely to be discussed in the call: the multi-party negotiations; the Apprentice Boys march; negotiations between John Hume, SDLP [Social Democratic and Labour Party] leader, and Gerry Adams, SF [Sinn Féin] leader; and the proposed Special European Council. Holmes also mentions the prospect of Major visiting Northern Ireland and making a speech there. The letter is heavily annotated with handwritten notes by Major.
