17 February 1992
Dear Richard.
VISIT OF THE IRISH PRIME MINISTER: 26 FEBRUARY
After consultation with the Prime Minister, I have agreed with Dermot Nally that the prime Minister and Mr Reynolds will have talks at 1830 on Wednesday 26 February followed by a working supper at 1930. The Prime Minister and Mr Reynolds will have an hour of private discussion (with just notetakers present). I have told Mr Nally that those present for the subsequent supper on our side are likely to be Mr Brooke, Mr Garel-Jones (in the Foreign Secretary's absence), Sir Robin Butler and myself. The Taoiseach will be accompanied by the Foreign Minister, Mr Andrews, and the Justice Minister, Mr Flynn, as well as officials
whose names will be given later.
I have agreed with Mr Nally that we will announce the visit at 1430 tomorrow (Tuesday 18 February). We will say that when the Prime Minister and Mr Reynolds spoke on the telephone after Mr Reynold's election they agreed to meet in the near future . Subjects for discussion will be bilateral issues, EC matters and other issues of mutual concern.
I am copying this letter to William Fittall (Northern Ireland Office) and Sonia Phippard (Cabinet Office).
Yours,
Stephen
