Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

1993-10-04

Meeting notes contain a reaffirmation of the British position about not engaging with violent actors. Criticises Ian Paisley's suggestion that Hume and Adams joint statement should lead to British uncooperation with the Irish government. In response to Molyneaux's concerns about Paisley and Hume fuelling the prospects of a joint referenda, Hurd reaffirmed the British recognition of the majority in Northern Ireland as the unit of self-determination. Molyneaux's understanding of SDLP unease at Hume's joint statement with Gerry Adams is noted.
