Date: 14 December 1993
PRIME MINISTER
DR EAMES
I had another word with the Archbishop this evening. I told him that we hoped the exercise would come to fruition around noon tomorrow, though we were saying nothing until it happened.
Eames asked me to "say God speed to John Major".
Eames will be at Lambeth Palace tomorrow morning. I told him that we would get a copy of the Joint Declaration across there, if it was published. He said that the media would be on to him very fast, and that he would need to clear his mind on what to say. I said that it would be enormously helpful, if we succeeded in the exercise, to have some encouraging comments from Eames on the lunch time news broadcasts.
Eames hopes to be in the House if you make a statement.

Note from Roderic Lyne to John Major recording a brief meeting with Robin Eames. Lyne told Eames that the Declaration was expected to be made on the following day, 15 December 1993, and that they would arrange for a copy of it to reach him at Lambeth Palace in the hope that he would be able to comment positively on it to the media. Eames wished the Prime Minister good luck.
