Annex: Comparison of Basic Principles in Adams' 13 January 1994 Press Release and the Joint Declaration

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

1994-01-14

A paper comparing Adams' principles in the press release with the joint declaration and concluding that (a) the only real point of contention is whether the British government should join the persuaders and that the statements Adams makes about the Joint Declaration are all incorrect – the British government has not ruled out any outcome because it has committed itself to self-determination by the people of the island of Ireland. Also notes that the exploratory dialogue with Sinn Féin would not only be focused on decommissioning.
