1996-06-28

This memo, sent by Veronica Sutherland to Quentin Thomas, provides an account of a conversation that took place between Sean Donlon and Sutherland on 27 June regarding the Irish assessment regarding a ceasefire. Donlon referred to a meeting that had taken place between the Irish and Sinn Féin delegations on 8 June, which had led the Irish Government to believe that a ceasefire was imminent. Sutherland and Donlon discussed John Bruton's views on Sinn Féin's entry into the talks, including the conditions for their entry. Sutherland also referred to two questions posed by Bruton to Sinn Féin in the Dáil Éireann, and the memo encloses a summary of the debate in the Dáil that took place on 25 June 1996 (compiled by E C Hallett). Parts of the text are highlighted, and there is some annotation on the memo in pen.
