Letter from John Major to Cardinal Basil Hume Referring to the Difficulties of Establishing Peace in the Context of John Hume's Talks with Gerry Adams

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

1993-11-17

John Major explains the present difficulties around the Joint Declaration process to Cardinal Basil Hume. He notes that despite the obvious historic opportunity for peace, difficulties still include: the impact of the Hume/Adams dialogue, the ongoing nationalist violence in response to Major's 19 October Brussels agreement with the Taoiseach to reject these talks. The advertised enclosure (of remarks on Northern Ireland from the Guildhall Speech) is not included.
