TO IMMEDIATE DUBLIN
TELNO
OF FEB 92
1. Please pass the following message from the Prime Minister to Mr Reynolds.
BEGINS
I send you my warmest congratulations on your election to the leadership of Fianna Fail. As Chancellor of the Exchequer I greatly enjoyed working with you during the Irish Presidency, and remember our informal conversations at Ashford Castle with much pleasure. I look forward to resuming and building on these contacts.
Recent tragic events - which we have both condemned - have underlined the need for our countries to continue to cooperate closely over Northern Ireland, in particular on political development and security issues. I hope that we can both continue to encourage the efforts to find a political settlement [and that we can meet before long. I shall be delighted to welcome you here in London.] ENDS
