The document details a phone call between Ian Paisley, the leader of the DUP [Democratic Unionist Party], and Patrick Mayhew, the Secretary of State of Northern Ireland, that took place on 19 July 1996. They discussed the prospects for the Apprentice Boys Parade in Derry on 10 August 1996, and Mayhew expressed concern that the march will lead to clashes with the RUC [Royal Ulster Constabulary]. They acknowledged that the SDLP was under a lot of pressure, and Mayhew noted that there was a lot of tension between Seamus Mallon and John Hume, who were the Deputy Leader and Leader of the SDLP respectively, on the state of the Belfast talks. Mayhew encouraged Paisley to speak to Hume encourage his efforts to prevent the escalation of conflict during the Apprentice Boys Parade. Parts of the document have been removed from view, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
