Memo proposing briefing George Mitchell on the Hume/Adams initiative, 9 July 1996

Saturday, 07 September 1996

i31123

This document contains a note from John Holmes, Private Secretary to Prime Minister John Major, to Martin Howard, Private Secretary to Secretary of State Patrick Mayhew, dated 9 July 1996. Holmes wrote that he had informed the Irish and American Governments about the letter that Gerry Adams [leader of Sinn Féin] had sent Major, as well as the letter that Major had sent to John Hume [leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP)]. Holmes requested Howard to keep George Mitchell updated on the same, and said that Howard could show the two letters to Mitchell but that he shouldn't give him copies of the letters to keep.
