2. IN MURRAY'S ABSENCE WITH THE PRESIDENT IN THE UNITED STATES I SPOKE TO HIS DEPUTY, BRIAN MCCARTHY. AFTER CONSULTING THE TAOISEACH, HE HAS CONFIRMED THAT THE PROPOSED DATE, 16 JUNE, IS SUITABLE, AND THAT THE TAOISEACH WILL PROBABLY BRING THE TANAISTE AND THE MINISTER FOR JUSTICE.

3. MCCARTHY SAID HE ASSUMED THAT THE AGENDA WILL COMPRISE NORTHERN IRELAND, EC MATTERS AND BILATERAL TOPICS (AND THE TAOISEACH PROPOSES TO SAY AS MUCH IN RESPONSE TO DAIL PQ'S THIS WEEK). THE IRISH ARE CONTENT TO LEAVE THE DETAILS UNTIL NEARER THE TIME, AND ARE WORKING ON THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE TALKS WILL BEGIN ABOUT 1700 OR 1800.

4. MCCARTHY ASKED WHEN WE WOULD PROPOSE TO ANNOUNCE THE MEETING (THE FACT THAT ONE IS TO TAKE PLACE IN JUNE IS ALREADY PUBLIC HERE). I SAID I THOUGHT WE WOULD PREFER TO DELAY UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE, FOR SECURITY REASONS.
