Friday, 22 March 1991

i24566

This is the cover letter for a paper written by Simon Marsh on the state of political movement and PIRA, which concludes that no change will take place over the next few weeks on the British position regarding Sinn Féin/IRA. However, it notes that the issue would be revisited in the future. The enclosed document is present in the box, but has been retained from public viewing. The formatting of the text suggests that part of the text has been redacted.

THE PROVISIONALS AND POLITICAL MOVEMENT

I attach a paper prepared by Simon Marsh

myself. The paper is very much a review of the current state of the Provisionals and political movement. At this stage the final conclusion of the paper is that nothing much is going to change over the period of weeks. However we think it is useful to review this issue from time to time and it is for this reason that the paper has been produced. We will constinue to monitor the situation in the light of the outcome of the political development talks and in the light of any activity on this front over the Easter period. I have not included Ministers on the circulation list though PUS may wish to do so.
