In this memo, Stephen Leach acknowledges that Peter Brooke has seen the minutes of his meeting with Father Alec Reid dated 16 November 1989. It notes that Brooke wanted to arrange a meeting on the 20 November 1989 to discuss John Hume's point about the timing of a possible "no strategic interest" speech.

DISCUSSION WITH FATHER REID

The Secretary of State has seen Mr McConnell's minute of yesterday on this subject. He has commented that he would like to review again the point made to him by Mr Hume in September about the timing of a possible "no strategic interest" speech (see paragraph 2 of my "Note for the record: of 21 September detailing part of a discussion with Mr Hume). We have arranged a meeting to discuss this point for 5.00pm on Monday 20 November in the VCR.

S J LEACH
