Dear Christopher,
MEETING WITH THE IRISH PRIME MINISTER: 16 JUNE
We discussed Dublin telegram number 177.
I should be grateful if you could propose the following arrangements to the Irish side:
1800 Arrival at No. 10
Photocall
Talks in the Cabinet Room
1930 approx Drinks
1945-2100 approx Working supper
Participation
Could you find out who will accompany the Taoiseach, Tanaiste and Minister for Justice? Will the Irish Ambassador attend? For the working supper, we shall need to keep the numbers down to six-a-side if we are to fit in the Small Dining Room here.
You have told me that the Foreign Secretary would attend the talks, but would not be able to stay for the supper. You suggested that Sir David Gillmore should take his place at the supper table (in which case, I assume that he will wish to attend the talks as well). I understand that the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland will be able to attend throughout the evening. Sir Robin Butler will also be present. Will our Ambassador be coming over from Dublin? If so, we shall have a full hand with the addition of a Private Secretary.
I am copying this letter to Jonathan Stephens (Northern Ireland Office) and Melanie Leech (Cabinet Office).
Yours ever,
Roderic
