Dear Christopher

NEW LEADER OF FIANA FAIL: MESSAGE OF CONGRATULATIONS

Thank you for your letter of 6 February enclosing a draft message from the Prime Minister to Mr Albert Reynolds. As I discussed with Richard Gozney, the message can issue with the additional words at the end:

".... and that we can meet before long. I should be delighted to welcome you here in London.

With best wishes,

John"

Our Press Office will let it be known that the message has issued. If asked about a meeting they will say that it had been agreed with Mr Haughey that there would be regular meetings between the Prime Minister and the Taoiseach with the next one taking place in London. The Prime Minister has renewed that
invitation. No date is yet in mind.

I am copying this letter to Jonathan Margetts (NIO) and Sonia Phippard (Cabinet Office ).
