This memo expresses thanks from John Blelloch to Peter Brooke for the briefing created for John McConnell for his meeting with Father Alec Reid. Blelloch also requests some preliminary work on the implications of a possible ceasefire package. The memo also includes a note stating that the original document has either been retained under section 3(4) of the Public Records Act 1958 or closed under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Part of the document is lightly annotated.

Discussion with Father Alec Reid
As I hope you will know by now, SofS has cleared the steering brief prepared for Mr McConnell, and I am very grateful to you and to him for the work that has been done in putting this brief together. We now await comments on that score.
2. You also mentioned two other pieces of business arising from the meeting that SofS held on 16 August. I agree with you entirely that the right way to pick up the action called for in paragraph 2(vi) of PS/SofS's minute of 18 August regarding the discussion with SofS is as part of the work now being done to produce a paper on security policy, but I would be grateful if you would now put in hand the action called for in paragraph 2(v) of the same record.
