From the Private Secretary

5 May 1993

Dear William,

MEETING WITH THE IRISH PRIME MINISTER

In her letter of 22 April to you, Melanie Leech suggested the afternoon of Wednesday 16 June as a possible date for the Prime Minister's pre-European Council meeting with the Taoiseach.

We have now consulted the Prime Minister on this proposal. He has a lunchtime commitment which he would prefer not to break. However, he could offer talks in the early evening, followed by a working supper. (It would suit the Prime Minister, and perhaps also the Taoiseach, if supper started and ended relatively early.)

Would it be our intention to invite the Tanaiste and the Minister of Justice, to be matched on our side by the Foreign Secretary and the Northern Ireland Secretary?

If you and the FCO would like now to reach agreement on the line up and timing, the way would be clear for the Foreign Office to put the invitation to the Irish Government through our Embassy in Dublin.

I am copying this letter to John Sawers (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) and to Melanie Leech (Cabinet Office).

Yours ever,
Roderic
