Mr John Major, M.P.,
Prime Minister

Dear John,

Many thanks indeed for your kind message of congratulations on the occasion of my appointment as Taoiseach.

I would like you to know that I am fully committed to developing the close and unique relationship between our two countries, both as members of the European Community and al friendly neighbours; and I look forward in particular to encouraging political progress in Northern Ireland. I am sure our meeting on Wednesday will be the beginning of a useful and productive relationship between us at Prime Ministerial level.

I take this opportunity to express my sincere good wishes to you and Norma for the future.

With kindest regards.

Yours sincerely,

Taoiseach
