1. PS/PRIME MINISTER HAS ASKED THAT YOU DELIVER TO MR HAUGHY THE DRAFT MESSAGE IN TUR, AMENDED AS FOLLOWS:

- FIRST PARAGRAPH TO READ
'DEAR CHARLIE
I WAS SORRY TO HEAR OF YOUR DECISION TO RETIRE. I GREATLY ENJOYED THE MEETINGS IN LONDON AND DULIN LAST YEAR, WHICH I BELIEVED LED TO A CLOSE UNDERSTANDING OF EACH OTHER'S VIEWS ON ANGLO-IRISH RELATIONS AND ON COMMUNITY ISSUES. AS YOU SAID AT OUR JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE ON 4 DECEMBER, NO TWO COUNTRIES IN EUROPE HAVE MORE INTERESTS IN COMMON TODAY.'

- IN THE THIRD PARAGRAPH, ANTE-PENULTIMATE LINE, DELETE THE WORD 'PERSONAL'

- END OF MESSAGE TO READ:
