Wednesday, 05 January 1994

Duplicate of CJ410947_20. Note from Jonathan Stephens attaching final version of Patrick Mayhew's letter to Dick Spring, to be handed over by David Blatherwick to Seán Ó hUiginn at 1600 on 5 January 1994. The letter is quite long and calls for unity in the face of PIRA attempts to 'divide the two Governments, and to recruit John Hume'. Their continued violence is then raised. Progress in the Talks is emphasised alongside increased security cooperation. The role of the Joint Declaration in the talks is then further discussed, and the paradoxical possibility that it has helped re-engage the DUP. Then goes on to underline the importance of further developing the Framework proposals alongside the Ancram bilaterals, despite the issues with the leak of the Irish version.
