Duplicate record of a meeting between Michael Ancram and the SDLP on 4 September 1996

Writing Peace: The National Archives of Ireland (NAI)

This document provides an account of a meeting between Michael Ancram and the SDLP that took place on 4 September 1996. In the meeting, Ancram reaffirmed the British government's commitment to the talks, and while Seamus Mallon spoke about how the events at Drumcree had reduced the time that the SDLP had to show to their community that the talks could produce a settlement. They spoke about unionist fears regarding the settlement and decommissioning being avoided. Mallon said that he was anxious for discussion on the comprehensive agenda to be brief, and that he was content with a 'broad headings' approach. They also discussed the position of the loyalist parties, and the SDLP asked Ancram if the Government could urge the Chairmen to tighten up the debate. A duplicate version of this document exists elsewhere in the box.
