Record of a meeting between the British Government and the SDLP on 4 September 1996

Writing Peace: The National Archives of Ireland (NAI)

This document provides an account of a meeting between the British Government and the SDLP delegation that took place on 4 September 1996. They spoke about hardening attitudes in the nationalist and unionist communities, and the SDLP side spoke about the need to show the possibility of a settlement to their community within six months. They also discussed the progress on decommissioning; John Hume stated that he thought that it was a non-issue and Seamus Mallon stated that he was content with the appointment of the sub-committee on decommissioning. Mallon also said that he wanted the discussion on the comprehensive agenda to be as brief as possible, and Michael Ancram proposed that they discuss the same in the Business Committee. Mallon expressed concern about the loyalist parties' position, and the SDLP delegation urged the Governments to ask the Chairman to facilitate proceedings by using his position to avoid endless debate.
