This document contains the speech that was given by John Hume at the 26th annual SDLP conference on 9 November 1996. In the speech, Hume spoke about the efforts and various achievements of the SDLP over the years. He referred to their contribution to the creation of the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1985, his dialogue with Gerry Adams, as well as the drafting of the joint declaration. He referred to the SDLP's commitment to the European Framework, and to a political process that was free from violence. He also spoke about the various economic problems faced by different groups in Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland's special links to the US, and the recent challenges in the talks process.
