Duplicate record of a meeting between the SDLP and the Irish Government on 4 September 1996 at 11.00

Writing Peace: The National Archives of Ireland (NAI)

This document provides an account of a meeting between the SDLP and the Irish Government that took place on 4 September 1996 at 11.00. The SDLP spoke about the mood post-Drumcree, and the negative impact that the events had on nationalist thinking. John Hume said that they were planning to meet with the UUP before the end of that week, and Eddie McGrady speculated that the UUP thought of the meeting as an opportunity for David Trimble to regain some of the credibility he had recently lost. John Bruton asked Hume for an assessment of the possibility of a ceasefire, and Seamus Mallon spoke about how republican resident associations were benefiting from sectarian populist sentiment. They spoke about the small loyalist parties and how they might react to the talks process once it started in earnest, as well as the DUP's interests in getting the loyalists out of the talks. They discussed other aspects of the situation on ground in Derry/Londonderry and Belfast, including the ongoing boycott and the possibility of an Apprentice Boys' march. Bruton ended the meeting after expressing agreement with Mallon's point about the need for them to show evidence of political movement on the part of the UUP. A duplicate version of this document exists elsewhere in the box.
