Henry W. Corbett Visualize "(February 18, 1827 -- March 31, 1903) Henry Winslow Corbett was a(n) merchant, city treasurer, and American politician. He was born in Westboro, Massachusetts and moved to Portland Oregon. Henry was a city treasurer of Portland, member of the city council, and chairman of the Republican State Central Committee. Corbett was elected as a Republican to the the United States Senate (March 4, 1867 - March 3, 1873) and was appointed to the United States Senate (March 6, 1897) but was not permitted to qualify. He was not elected in 1873 or 1901. James K. Kelly Visualize (February 16, 1819 — September 15, 1903) Kelly was an American politician and lawyer. James Kelly was born in Center County, Pennsylvania and settled in Oregon in 1851 after going to California to mine gold. While practicing law in the Oregon Territory, Kelly was a commissioner for the codification of the territorial laws (1852), a member of the Territorial Legislature from 1853 to 1857, and a delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1857. After Oregon obtained statehood, Kelly served as a member of the State Senate from 1860 to 1864. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate for the Forty-Second, Forty-Third, and Forty-Fourth Congresses (March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1877). John H. Mitchell Visualize (June 22, 1835 — December 8, 1905) Mitchell was an American politician and lawyer. John Mitchell was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania and moved to California after studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1857. From California he moved to Oregon and practiced law in Portland. While there he served as a State Senator from 1862 to 1866. Mitchell was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican for the Forty-Third, Forty-Fourth, and Forty-Fifth Congresses. After his election, his election was contested on claims of bigamy and desertion, however, the Senate committee decided that the claims did not warrant an investigation. James W. Nesmith Visualize (June 23, 1820 -- 17 June, 1885) Nesmith was an American politician. Born in New Brunswick, Canada, while his parents were on vacation, Nesmith moved to Oregon in 1843. Nesmith was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1860 and later elected as a Democrat to the Forty-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Joseph G. Wilson. James H. Slater Visualize (December 28, 1826 — January 28, 1899) Slater was an American politician, lawyer, and presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1868. James Slater was born in Illinois and moved to Oregon in 1850. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1854 and began his legal career as a clerk of the district court of the Territory of Oregon from 1853 to 1856. His political career started in 1857 when he served as a member of the Territorial Assembly. After Oregon obtained statehood, Slater served as a member of the State House of Representatives (1859) and as district attorney for the fifth judicial district of Oregon (1868). He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-Second Congress from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873. Joseph S. Smith Visualize (June 20, 1824 — July 13, 1884) Smith was a teacher, lawyer, and politician. Joseph Smith was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania and moved to Oregon City in 1844. After studying law and being admitted to the bar, Smith moved to Washington and was elected to the Territorial House of Representatives and later, appointed by the President of the United States to be the United States Attorney for the Washington Territory. Following his time in Washington, he moved back to Oregon and practiced law until 1869, when he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-First Congress from March 4, 1869 to March 3, 1871. George H. Williams Visualize "(March 26, 1823 -- April 4, 1910) George Henry Williams was a lawyer, judge, public servant, mayor, and American politician. William was born in New Lebanon, Columbia County, New York and moved to Iowa and then Oregon. Williams studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1844. He was judge of the first judicial district of Iowa (1847 - 1852), Chief Justice of the Territory of Oregon (1853 - 1857); was reappointed and declined; Attorney General of the United States in the Cabinet of President Grant (1872-1875) and was nominated by Grant as a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court but his name was withdrawn. He served as a presidential elector on the democratic ticked in 1852, member of the State constitutional convention of Oregon in 1858, and was mayor of Portland (1902 - 1905). Joseph G. Wilson Visualize (December 13, 1826 — July 2, 1873) Wilson was a farmer, lawyer, and judge. Joseph Wilson was born in New Hampshire and moved to the Oregon Territory after graduating from the Cincinnati Law School in 1852. He served as the clerk of the Territorial Legislature (1853) and later served as an associate judge to the State Supreme Court (1864-1866, 1868-1870). Wilson was elected to the United States House of Representatives as Republican to the Forty-Third Congress. He served only five months before his death on July 2, 1873.
