James H. Slater

(December 28, 1826 — January 28, 1899) Slater was an American politician, lawyer, and presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1868. James Slater was born in Illinois and moved to Oregon in 1850. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1854 and began his legal career as a clerk of the district court of the Territory of Oregon from 1853 to 1856. His political career started in 1857 when he served as a member of the Territorial Assembly. After Oregon obtained statehood, Slater served as a member of the State House of Representatives (1859) and as district attorney for the fifth judicial district of Oregon (1868). He was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-Second Congress from March 4, 1871 to March 3, 1873.
