The Civil Rights Act of 1875

John H. Mitchell

(June 22, 1835 — December 8, 1905) Mitchell was an American politician and lawyer. John Mitchell was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania and moved to California after studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1857. From California he moved to Oregon and practiced law in Portland. While there he served as a State Senator from 1862 to 1866. Mitchell was elected to the United States Senate as a Republican for the Forty-Third, Forty-Fourth, and Forty-Fifth Congresses. After his election, his election was contested on claims of bigamy and desertion, however, the Senate committee decided that the claims did not warrant an investigation.
