(2014) The Stormont House Agreement

Writing Peace: Treaties and Agreements

2014-12-23

An agreement reached between the British and Irish governments and the majority of parties making up the Northern Ireland Executive after 11 weeks of talks at Stormont. It sought to provide new approaches to key and sensitive issues left unresolved by the Belfast Agreement (1995) and St Andrews Agreement (2006).

Issues of identity, legacy, and victim rights, as well as flags and parades, welfare reforms, and stabilizing government finances were a particular focus.

The agreement concluded approximately thirty hours of continuous final-stage talks, and was followed by ten weeks of further talks culminating in the Fresh Start Agreement in November 2015.
