United States Fourteenth Amendment & The Civil Rights Act of 1866

An amendment to the Constitution of the United States that granted citizenship and equal rights, both civil and legal, to Black Americans, including those who had been emancipated by the thirteenth amendment.

Nathan F. Dixon Visualize (1 May, 1812 -- 11 April, 1881) Dixon was an American lawyer, banker, and politician. Born in Westerly, R.I., Dixon studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1837. Dixon was a member of the State house of representatives 1841-1849, 1851-1854, 1858-1862, and 1871-1877. Dixon was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-first Congress and later as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth and to the three succeeding Congresses. William Sprague Visualize (3 November, 1799-- 19 October, 1856) Sprague was an American politician. Born in Cranston, R.I., Sprague was a the speaker of the State house of representatives from 1832 to 1835. Sprague was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fourth Congress and was elected as governor of Rhode Island from 1838 to 1839. Afterwards, Sprague was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Nathan F. Dixon.
