"(January 22, 1819 -- June 20, 1887) Thomas Laurens Jones was a(n) lawyer, public servant, and American politician. Thomas was born in White Oak, Rutherford County, North Carolina and moved to Newport, Kentucky in 1849. He served as a member of the state house of representatives (1853-1855). Jones was elected as a Democrat to the 40th, 41st, and 44th Congresses (March 4, 1867 - March 3, 1871 & March 4, 1875 - March 3, 1877) and was not reelected in 1870. During his time on Congress, he served as chairman on the Committee on Railways and Canals (44th Congress).
