(30 August 1739 – 30 August 1812) U.S. Representative, soldier, land speculator, and Governor of Georgia.
After serving in the House of Burgesses and as a colonel under George Washington in the Revolutionary War, Mathews was appointed as brigadier general in the militia and governor. He then became a member of the First Congress and served for one term before resuming the governorship.
