The opening Plenary session of Strand 2 was held. Opening statements were given by the Chairman, Alliance, the British and Irish Government delegations, and the SDLP.

The opening plenary session of Strand 2 of the talks was held at Lancaster House in London today. The session, which commenced at 2.00pm–– was attended by the United Kingdom and Irish Governments and the Alliance, SDLP, Ulster Democratic Unionist and Ulster Unionist Parties. The delegations were led respectively by Sir Patrick Mayhew, MP, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Mr John Wilson, TD, Tanaiste, Minister for Defence and Minister for the Gaeltacht, Dr John Alderdice, Mr John Hume, MP, MEP, Rev. Dr. Ian Paisley, MP, MEP and Mr James Molyneaux, MP. The session adjourned at 5.20pm–– and will resume tomorrow morning at –– am.
