A selection of mini-models designed to provide an insight into the ongoing work of 'Writing Peace' and to demonstrate Quill's approach to visualising the archive material and tracking the process of negotiation. This collection is still under construction.
This mini-model is still under construction. The editors aim to assemble a comprehensive (but non-exhaustive) collection of drafts of the Downing Street Joint Declaration to track how the text developed over time. This mini-model only contains the drafts, but we are also working on a more comprehensive model that will include the meetings where the declaration was under consideration, track the process of amendment, and detail further annotations made to each draft. This detailed model is forthcoming in December 2023.

[Exact time unknown] The British Government amended JD12 to include a reference to the constitutional guarantee. This version of the Joint Declaration was never shared with the Irish delegation, but it was shown to Jim Molyneaux on 18 November 1993. He had a very strong negative reaction to it.

Copy of Joint Declaration to be shown during John Major's upcoming meeting with Jim Molyneaux
Copy of Joint Declaration enclosed with other documents but lacking the footnotes of the earlier enclosure. These seem to have been inserted to clarfiy language and reassure Unionists/Jim Molyneaux about the limits of the Joint Declaration.
Letter attaches a briefing and a JDI draft including a reference to the constitutional guarantee and an optional amplification of this guarantee in square brackets. The two versions of the texts will be tested on Jim Molyneaux and the Irish
Fax offers advice to Downing Street about how to handle Molyneaux and reassure him about the Joint Declaration. A key point is to emphasise the assessment of an historic opportunity for peace and to distance the Initiative from Hume/Adams. Documents are enclosed (speaking note, intelligence report, draft of JDI) to show Molyneaux during the meeting.
The British showed Molyneaux the Irish assessment that the PIRA might agree to a cessation of violence following an Anglo-Irish Joint Statement. A British intelligence report to back this up was shown as well. Molyneaux expressed reservations. After a viewing of the JDI text he concluded that it was unnacceptable to Unionist opinion in its current form. It was resolved that Molyneaux would think about how to modify the text to bridge the gap between Unionist opinion and the Irish government.
