Henry J. Raymond
"(January 24, 1820 -- June 18, 1869) Henry Jarvis Raymond was a journalist, lieutenant govenror, public servant, and American politician. Raymond was born in Lima, Livingston County, New York. He wrote for the New York Tribune (1841 - 1848), Courier and Enquirer (1848 - 1850) and Harper's Magazine (1850). He established the New York Times in 1851. Raymond was a member of the state assembly (1850, 1851, and 1862) and was speaker in 1851. He was a delegate to the Whig National Convention in 1852, Lieutenant Governor in 1854 (declined renomination), and delegate to the Republican National Convention. He was elected as a Republican to the 39th Congress (March 4, 1865 - March 3, 1867) and was not reelected in 1866.
