William E. Dodge
"(September 4, 1805 -- February 9, 1883) William Earle Dodge was a clerk, businessman, and American politician. Dodge was born in Hartford, Connecticut and moved to New York City in 1818. Dodge established the house of Phelps, Dodge & Company and was its head for 40 years. He was a delegate to the peace convention of 1861, in Washington D.C. in an effort to come up with a peaceful alternative to the Civil War. William successfully contested as a Republican the election of James Brooks to the 39th Congress (April 7, 1866 - March 3, 1867) declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1866.
