The Civil Rights Act of 1875

Simon B. Conover

(September 23, 1840 — April 19, 1908) Conover was a medical doctor and politician. Simon Conover was born in Middlesex County, New Jersey and studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Nashville, Tennessee. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army and was appointed acting assistant surgeon in 1866. When Florida was readmitted into the Union, Conover resigned from the medical department of the Army. He was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1879.
