George Mitchell

Senator George Mitchell chaired both the International Body on Arms Decommissioning and the all-party talks from 1996-1998 which resulted in the Belfast Good Friday Agreement. From 1995-2001, he also held the position of United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland, appointed by President Clinton. He had previously served as a United States senator from Maine from 1980 to 1995, and as Senate Majority Leader from 1989 to 1995.
