Edward Haight

(March 26, 1817 — September 15, 1885) Edward Haight, a Representative from New York; born in New York City on March 26, 1817; attended the common schools; employed in a countinghouse early in life; later engaged in the wholesale dry-goods business and in banking; moved to Westchester, N.Y., in 1850; a director of the National Bank of New York; organized the Bank of the Commonwealth of New York City in 1856 and was its president until 1870; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1863); unsuccessful candidate of the Republican-Union Party for reelection to the Thirty-eighth Congress; member of the board of directors of several banks and insurance companies; died in Westchester, N.Y., September 15, 1885; interment in Trinity Church Cemetery, New York City.
