The Road to Civil War

William H. English

(27 August, 1822 -- 7 February 1896) English was an American lawyer, politician and writer. Born in Lexington, Indiana, English studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1846. English served as principle clerk for the State House of Representatives in 1843 and as clerk for the United States Treasury Department from 1844 to 1848. English subsequently served as secretary of the Indiana State Constitutional Convention in 1850 and as Speaker for the State House of Representatives (1851-1852). English was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-Third and three succeeding Congresses serving from March 4, 1853 to March 3, 1861. Afterwards, English served as Regent of the Smithsonian Institution, had an unsuccessful attempt to run for Vice President on the Democratic ticket (1880), and authored several books.
