James W. Nye
"(June 10, 1815 -- December 25, 1876) James Warren Nye was a lawyer, judge, president of a board of police, governor, and American politician. Nye was born in De Ruyter, Madison County, New York and moved to Nevada Territory in 1861. Nye studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was a district attorney (1839), Judge of Madison County (1840-1848), and served as the first president of the Metropolitan Board of Police, New York City (1857 - 1860). He was appointed as governor, by Abraham Lincoln in 1861, of the new Nevada Territory. He was not a successful candidate as a Free-Soiler to the 30th Congress. He was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate (February 1, 1865, reelected in 1867 and served until March 3, 1873), where he was chairman on the Committee on Enrolled bills (39th Congress), served on the Committee on Revolutionary claims (40th Congress), and on the Committee on Territories (41st Congress).
