The Civil Rights Act of 1875

John M. Thompson

(January 4, 1829 — September 8, 1903) John McCandless Thompson was an American politician and lawyer. Thompson was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania in 1829. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1854. Before the Civil War, Thompson served in the State House of Representatives in 1859 and 1860. During the war, he enlisted in the Union Army and attained the ranks of major and lieutenant colonel. Thompson was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Ebenezer McJunkin.
